Big Y Results & Matches Introduction

The Big Y is a Y-chromosome direct paternal line test. We have designed it to explore deep ancestral links on our common paternal tree. This test examines thousands of known branch markers as well as millions of places where there may be new branch markers.

Accessing Big Y Results & Matches 

You can access Big Y Results & Matches from your dashboard or from your navigation bar.

To access from your dashboard:

  1. Sign in to your kit.
  2. On your dashboard, locate the Y-DNA Results & Tools widget.
  3. On the Y-DNA Results & Tools widget, in the Big Y section, click the Results button or the Big Y Matches button. 

To access from your navigation bar:

  1. Sign in to your kit.
  2. On the navigation bar at the top of the page, go to Results & Tools > Big Y > Results or Results & Tools > Big Y > Matches.

Big Y Results contains the following: 

  1. Named Variants - Displays your SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) that are on the list of known SNPs. Named Variants are the Y-DNA SNPs that are on the list of known SNPs against which Big Y data is compared. Click here to see the Big Y - Named Variants Guide for more info. 
  2. Private Variants- Displays your SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) that are not on the list of known SNPs. Private variants are the Y-DNA SNP markers that are not on the list of 600,000+ known SNPs.  Click here to see the Big Y - Private Variants Guide for more info. 
  3. Matching - Displays your Big Y Matches and corresponding information. Click here to see the Big Y - Matching Guide for more info. 
  4. Export (CSV)- Click to download all of your Big Y SNP information to a .CSV file.
  5. Download VCF - Click to download a Variant Call File with all the variant calls from the Big Y.
  6. Download Raw Data - Click to download a .ZIP file of your results.
