Big Y - Named Variants Guide

The Named Variants page displays your Y-DNA SNPs that are on the list of 800,000+ known SNPs against which Big Y data is compared. This page allows you to search SNPs you are positive for. You can search by SNP name or position. You can also use the SNP Checker feature on this page to check for any position, regardless of the call on your specific test.

SNP mutations are assigned names as they are discovered. New private mutations might have reserved names that are not yet added to this list.

The Named Variants Page contains the following features:

  1. Named Variants - This indicates which page of your Big Y Results you are viewing. You can toggle between them by clicking on each tab.
  2. Download Files - Download your Big Y data in a variety of formats. Read more about Big Y - Data Downloads here.
  3. SNP Checker - Check for any position, regardless of the call on your specific test. You can read more about the SNP Checker here.
  4. SNP Name - Lists all named SNPs for which you are positive. Clicking on any SNP Name in this column will pull up a pop-up window displaying that SNPs location in the SNP Checker.
NOTE: Some SNP markers may have multiple names according to different publications and sources.
  5. SNP Name Search - Search for any named SNPs for which you are positive. Clicking on any SNP Name in this column will pull up a pop-up window displaying that SNPs location in the SNP Checker.
NOTE: Some SNP markers may have multiple names according to different publications and sources.
  6. Position - The location of the variant on the Y chromosome. This position corresponds to the GRCh38 human reference genome, which is maintained by the Genome Reference Consortium.
  7. Position Search - Search for any named chromosome locations where you have a positive SNP. Clicking on any Position in this column will pull up a pop-up window displaying that SNPs location in the SNP Checker.
  8. On Haplotree? - Shows if the variant is currently on the Y-DNA Haplotree.
NOTE: Named SNPs that are not placed on the haplotree may not be phylogenetically relevant.
  9. On Haplotree Search - Filter the variants by whether they are on the Y-DNA Haplotree.
  10. Ancestral - Displays the nucleotide base indicated by the GRCh38 human reference genome, which is maintained by the Genome Reference Consortium.
  11. Derived - Shows the current DNA nucleotide you have at that position.
