Test processing times depend on the type of test, lab volume, and whether it's a new test, upgrade, or add-on. Please note that while we provide estimated timeframes, they are not guaranteed, as various factors beyond volume and test type—such as sample quality or additional quality control measures—may impact completion time. High order volumes, especially for new tests requiring DNA extraction, may also result in longer processing times before results appear in your account.
Processing Time Overview
The estimated processing time for your test is based on the batch date listed in your Order History. Each test type follows its own processing timeline, so a delay in one test does not necessarily impact the completion of others. Below are the Average processing times* for standard tests under normal circumstances:
Standard Processing Times
- Family Finder™: 2 to 4 weeks
- mtFull Sequence: 6 to 8 weeks
- Y-DNA (excluding Big Y): 3 to 6 weeks
- Big Y-700: 6 to 10 weeks
These items don’t require lab processing, so they are typically completed quickly. If you experience a delay beyond the expected timeframe, please contact Customer Service for assistance.
- BAM File: Up to 72 hours.
- Autosomal Transfer Unlock: Up to 72 hours.
Current Average Processing Times*
As of July 9, 2025
- Family Finder™: 5 to 6 weeks – Experiencing a slight delay
- mtFull Sequence: 6 to 7 weeks – Within standard time frame
- Y-DNA (excluding Big Y): 6 to 7 weeks – Within standard time frame
- Big Y-700: 11 to 12 weeks – Experiencing a slight delay
Test Processing Time Estimate and Delays
Most delays are due to lab volume, but occasionally, upgrades or add-ons may require an additional sample for us to begin your test. If this happens, we will send you a collection kit, and our Customer Service team will notify you via email (to the primary email address on your account) to let you know to expect it.
It is important that the mailing address on your kit record is accurate to ensure the collection kit reaches you promptly.
On rare occasions, if a sample or result fails to meet our stringent quality control standards, we may need to rerun the test. Even more rarely, the test may fail quality control more than once. If an additional sample is required, we will send out a new collection kit and send an email to the primary email address on the account to notify you that a kit is on its way.
Please note that in most cases, rerunning a test requires starting from the beginning. While these tests are given the highest priority, they will still follow the current average processing time.
If you have any concerns or need further assistance, please reach out to our Customer Service Center.
* Because this is an average range of completion times, individual results may vary. Some tests may be completed sooner, while others may take longer, depending on specific circumstances. For example, if additional samples are required from outside the U.S., the turnaround time may be extended. However, processing time does not impact the accuracy of the results, as all tests undergo the same rigorous quality control standards.
