The Y-DNA Genetic Distance report allows you to calculate the genetic distance between one project member and others in your group.

Accessing the Y-DNA Genetic Distance Report

To access this report:

  1. Sign in to your GAP account by entering your Project Administrator username and password.
  2. On the navigation bar, hover your cursor over Reports > Genetic Reports, and click Y-DNA Genetic Distance on the drop-down menu.

    OR

In the lower section of your GAP dashboard, in the Genetic Reports section, click Y-DNA Genetic Distance.

Controls and Columns

The Y-DNA Genetic Distance report contains the following controls:

  • Markers – This is the testing level for the comparison.
  • Page Size – This is the number of results that will be displayed on each page of the comparison table.
  • Show Advanced Filter – Click to display the following fields:
    • Kit Number – Allows you to filter/search the table by member kit number.
    • Name – Allows you to filter/search the table by name of the project member provided on the project member’s FamilyTreeDNA Account Settings Contact Information tab.

The Y-DNA Genetic Distance Results report contains the following columns:

  • Arrow Icon – Allows you to select a specific group member
  • Kit Number – Project member’s kit number that was assigned with their first order. You may click on the kit number to view their results if they have set their Account Settings Project Preferences Group Administrator Access level to either Limited or Advanced.
  • Name – Name of the project member provided on the project member’s Contact Information tab.
  • Y-DNA Subgroup – These are the subgroups that you have created in the Member Subgrouping tool.

Clicking the blue Arrow Icon will compare the selected match to other group members who are Y-STR matches to that group member. It will create a table with the following columns:

  • Kit Number – Project member’s kit number that was assigned with their first order.
  • Name – Name of the project member provided on the project member’s Contact Information tab.
  • Markers Tested – This is the number of Y-DNA STR (short tandem repeat) markers for which the project member has results.
  • Distance – This is the genetic distance between the two group members at the testing level specified in report options. There is a limit on the maximum genetic distance between the project member you have selected and those who appear on the comparison list. The maximum genetic distances are:
    • Y-DNA12:  3
    • Y-DNA25: 5
    • Y-DNA37: 7
    • Y-DNA67: 25
    • Y-DNA111: 40

The maximum genetic distances have been set to be more than what one would expect to find in the genealogical time frame and for higher testing levels, the historic time frame.

  • Y-DNA Subgroup – These are the subgroups that you have set on the Member Subgrouping page.
  • TiP Report - Using the TiP Report link, you may generate a report of the likely time to a common ancestor between the two men.
