Y-DNA Haplogroup Origins Overview
The Y-DNA Haplogroup Origins page contains the following information:
- Your Haplogroup - Your specific subgroup and its major parent haplogroup.
- Your Parent Haplogroup - A larger, older haplogroup that contains your specific subgroup as well as others.
-
Age - The approximate age of your parent haplogroup, indicating how long ago this lineage is estimated to have originated.
- NOTE: The age is based on scientific data collated when this page was created and may not reflect recent scientific developments. For the most up-to-date age estimates for your haplogroup, take a look at your Y-DNA Discover™ Country Frequency Report.
- Region - Specifies the geographical regions where your parent haplogroup is primarily found and notes its historical significance.
- Marker Level - Y-STR matching levels. You can view matches at the 12, 25, 37, 67, and 111 marker level matches as you scroll down the page.
- Genetic Distance - Within each marker level, your matches are further divided by the number of STR mismatches they have compared to you.
- Haplogroup - Displays your matches' haplogroup, which is either predicted from their Y-STR results or confirmed by their Y-SNP results.
- Country - Self-reported country of origin for your matches' paternal earliest known ancestor. This is supplied by your matches and not based on DNA results.
-
Comments - Additional self-provided information your match included on their release form. Our original release form allowed test takers to list the countries of origin their direct paternal and maternal ancestors.
- NOTE: This form has since been replaced by the DNA Processing Consent Form, which does not include an option to add this genealogical information. The information in the Comments column cannot be updated by the test taker, and is usually redundant to the Country column
- Match Total - The number of matches who have listed the specified country.
