Creating an Account

Do I Need to Create a FamilyTreeDNA Account?

If you are a new customer or you have just purchased a DNA test kit, you might be wondering how to register or create an online account to view your results.

At FamilyTreeDNA, you do not need to create or register a new account. Your account is automatically created the moment you order a test. Instead of a traditional username and password that you choose during registration, your account is identified by a unique Kit Number.

What is my Kit Number?

Your kit number is a unique multi-digit number that is automatically assigned when you first order a test. It includes the contact information you entered when purchasing your kit. Many aspects of your results and our database are identified by this number, and it is crucial for processing and reporting your results. For this reason, it cannot be changed.

Where can I find my Kit Number and Password?

When you first purchased your DNA test kit, FamilyTreeDNA automatically generated a secure password and linked it to your new kit number.

This information was sent directly to your email:

  • Check your inbox - Look for an email from FamilyTreeDNA sent to the primary email address you used when first ordering the kit.
  • Check your physical kit - Your unique kit number can also be found printed on the collection kit box and on the test vials.

Note: If you ordered more than one test at a time, you may receive a separate email containing the kit number and password for each individual kit.

How to Sign In for the First Time

To access your account and view the status of your testing or your results, follow the steps laid out in our Signing In and Out of Your Account article. From here an automated onboarding process will help you with additional account details.

Tip: After signing in for the first time, you can change your password to something more secure and easier to remember by navigating to your Account Settings.

What if I can't find the email or forgot my information?

If you cannot find your original confirmation email, or if you run into trouble signing in, you can easily recover your details from the main Sign In page:

  • Click Forgot your Kit Number or GAP Username to have your kit number emailed to your primary email address.
  • Click Forgot your password? to receive a password reset link.
