Using the mtDNA Matches Page - Detail View

The mtDNA Matches page contains a wealth of information about your direct maternal connections. This information can be arranged in two layouts: Detail View and Table View. To understand what this information tells you about your matches in either view is explained in our Understanding mtDNA Matches article.

Accessing the mtDNA Matches Page - Detail View

You can access the mtDNA Matches Page from your dashboard or from your navigation bar.

To access from your dashboard:

  1. Sign in to your kit.
  2. On your dashboard, locate the mtDNA Results & Tools section.
  3. On the mtDNA Results & Tools section, click the mtDNA Matches button. 
  4. You are directed to the mtDNA Matches page.

To access from your navigation bar:

  1. Sign in to your kit.
  2. Hover your mouse over Results & Tools On the navigation bar at the top of the page.
  3. Follow the drop-down menus to mtDNA > Matches
  4. You are directed to the mtDNA Matches page.

mtDNA Matches Page - Detail View Overview 

The mtDNA Matches Page contains the following:

  1. Detail View - Toggles from Detail View to Table View.
  2. Table View - Toggles from Table View to Detail View.
  3. Exact Search - Checking this box will filter your matches to only those who meet the exact keyword(s) entered in the Search Field
    • For example - If you enter "H1" in the Search field, it will filter matches who have listed "H1" but not matches who have a more or less refined haplogroup such as "H" or "H1a"
  4. Search field - Enter a name, country of origin, or haplogroup. The search results can be adjusted in the Search Criteria Dropdown menu.
  5. Search Criteria Dropdown menu - Allows you to filter matches based on the following:

    • All - Includes any matches containing the name, mtDNA Haplogroup, or Maternal Country of Origin of you matches.
    • Name - Filter matches by their first and/or last name. This is not case sensitive.
    • mtDNA Haplogroup - Filters matches by maternal haplogroup. 
      • Note: Checking the Exact Search box will exclude any matches with more or less refined haplogroups than your own. 
    • Maternal Country of Origin - Filters matches by their self-reported direct maternal ancestor
      • Note: This must be an exact country match.
        • For example, if you enter "Great Britain" for the search criteria, it will return all matches at that match level who have listed "Great Britain" but not ones who have listed "England."
  6. Coding Region - Displays matches with a Genetic Distance of up to three (3) who share mtDNA with you in the Hypervariable 1, Hypervariable 2, and Coding Region regions of your mitochondrial DNA within a Genetic Distance of 3. These are your closest matches.
  7. Hypervariable Region 2 - Displays exact matches who share mtDNA with you in the Hypervariable 1 and Hypervariable 2 regions of your mitochondrial DNA.
    • Note: Matches at this level must be exact, meaning they do not allow for any Genetic Distance
  8. Hypervariable Region 1 - Displays exact matches who share mtDNA with you in the Hypervariable 1 region of your mitochondrial DNA.
    • Note: Matches at this level must be exact, meaning they do not allow for any Genetic Distance
  9. Filter - Opens a side bar menu with the following options:

    • Genetic Distance - This filter specifies a Genetic Distance. The options are: All Matches, 1 Step, 2 Steps, and 3 Steps
      • Note: Only Coding Region matches allow a genetic distance greater than zero (0)
    • Groups - Filters matches to only those who are also members the same project you have selected.
    • Family Tree Types - This filters matches based on the type of family tree they have attached to their account. These filters apply to the settings in the Family Tree Sharing section on the Account Settings that the match has selected. The options are: 
      • Public Trees - Trees that have been set to All FamilyTreeDNA users or Only Matches (when signed into a kit.)
      • Private Trees - Trees that have been set to Only Me.
      • Empty Trees - Individuals who do not have a family tree on their account.

        Note: Kits that have a family tree connected to MyHeritage will be shown under the Public Trees filter.
    • Match Date - Filters matches to a specified date range. 
      • Note: If an mtDNA or mtDNA Plus test is upgraded to an mtFull Sequence test, the match date will be updated to the date the mtFull Sequence test results were completed. You can organize matches based on match date in the Sort By drop-down menu (see below.)
    • Test Taken - Filters matches based on test type(s) taken.
  10. Sort by - Opens a drop-down menu with the following options:

    • Genetic Distance - Sorts matches from lowest Genetic Distance to highest or vice versa.
      • Note: This filter is only available at the Coding Region match level.
    • mtDNA Haplogroup - Sorts matches from most refined haplogroup to least refined or vice versa.
      • Note: This lists your matches haplogroup based on build 17 of the Phylotree, now also known as the Legacy mtDNA haplotree.
    • Mitotree Haplogroup - Sorts matches from most refined haplogroup to least refined or vice versa.
      • Note: This lists your matches haplogroup assigned according to the updated Mitotree haplotree.
    • Maternal Country of Origin - Organizes matches based on their self-reported direct maternal country of origin
    • Maternal Earliest Known Ancestor - Organizes matches based on their self-reported direct maternal ancestor
    • Most Recent Matches - Sorts matches from newest to oldest or vice versa based on their Match Date.
  11. Export CSV - Allows you to export All Matches, or only those matches included in the Filters you have applied. 
  12. Match Name - The name your match has provided on their kit.
  13. Test Type(s) - The test type(s) your match has taken. This can be helpful for Advanced Matching or referencing our mtDNA or Y-DNA matching databases.
  14. Genetic Distance - The number of mtDNA mutations that differ between two people. 
  15. Link on Family Tree - Links your matches to your tree on MyHeritage (not working right now to test)
  16. mtDNA haplogroup - Your matches haplogroup based on build 17 of the Phylotree, now also known as the Legacy mtDNA haplotree.
  17. Mitotree Haplogroup - Your match's haplogroup assigned according to the updated Mitotree haplotree.
  18. Maternal Country of Origin -Lists your match's self-reported maternal country of origin.
  19. Maternal Earliest Known Ancestor - Lists your match's self-reported direct maternal ancestor.
  20. Family Tree - Clicking this icon directs you to your match's family tree. 
    • Family Tree Icon.png = Has a tree available
    • No Family Tree icon.png= Does not have a tree available
  21. Add Note - Opens the NOTES tab on the Match Profile Card.
    • Note: These notes are private and will not be seen by matches.
    • Note: Please note that the above note is a note about notes.
  22. Match Date - Lists the date the test taker became a match. 
    • Note: If an mtDNA or mtDNA Plus test is upgraded to an mtFull Sequence test, the match date will be updated to the date the mtFull Sequence test results were completed. You can organize matches based on match date in the Sort By drop-down menu (see above.)
