Managing Your Archived FamilyTreeDNA Tree

If you uploaded a family tree to or built one on FamilyTreeDNA prior to September 9, 2024, your tree has been archived and is accessible in a read-only format. This article is for accounts that have not been connected to a MyHeritage or Wikitree account.

Accessing tree settings

To access your Tree Settings page:

  1. Sign in to your kit.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the page, hover your cursor over your name/Kit No.
  3. Click on Account Settings from the drop-down menu.Dashboard management.png

Family Tree Archived Tree options

This tree is read-only, meaning that you are unable to edit, add or remove nodes, change information, or link matches. All of your research and connections are preserved. Your read-only tree provides the following options:

  1. View options - This section allows the user to switch between Family View and Pedigree View for displaying the family tree.
  2. Tree Management - This icon provides access to tools for managing the family tree. Please see Archived Tree Management section below.
  3. Share Tree - Provides a sharable link for you to copy.
  4. Search bar - Allows the you to find a specific person or location within the family tree.
    Note: Search bar is case sensitive
  5. Zoom controls - These are controls for zooming in (+) and zooming out (−) on the family tree display.

Archived Tree Management

The Tree Management page for archived trees contains the following options:

  1. Export Tree - Generates a downloadable tree in GEDCOM format.
  2. Tree Name - Displays the current name of the family tree. The Pencil icon to the right of the tree name allows you to edit it.
  3. Tree Description - Displays the current description of the family tree. The Pencil icon to the right of the tree description allows you to edit it.
  4. Summary - Provides an overview of the tree's content including the total number of individuals, linked matches, surnames, photos, and notes.
  5. Name column - Lists the names of individuals who are linked as matches in the tree.
    Note: Additional matches can no longer be added to the tree.
  6. Email icon - Allows you to send an email to the linked individual.
  7. Profile Card - Displays the profile card of the match.
  8. Linked Relationship column - Shows the genealogical relationship of the linked individual to the Home Person (e.g., "First Cousin").
  9. Test Taken column - Lists the type of DNA test(s) taken by the linked individual (e.g., Family Finder, mtFull Sequence, Y-37, etc.)
  10. Export CSV - Export the data from the Linked Matches table into a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file. This file can be opened in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or other spreadsheet applications.
  11. Page navigation - Allows you to navigate through multiple pages of linked matches, showing the current page number and options to go to the first, previous, next, or last page.
  12. Import to Ancestral Surnames - Provides an option to import direct maternal and paternal surnames from the tree to the Surnames Tab of your Account Settings.
  13. Delete Tree - Deletes your tree including all associated data such as people, photos, notes, and linked relationships.
    Note: This action cannot be undone.
