Accessing Your Family Tree

FamilyTreeDNA offers a variety of options for family trees. You have the ability to connect your kit to a family tree on MyHeritage or Wikitree, or retain your archived tree built through the FamilyTreeDNA myFamilyTree feature, if you have one.

You may also connect more than one tree to your kit. Possible tree combinations for your kit are:

  • Wikitree family tree and MyHeritage family tree
  • Wikitree family tree and Archived FamilyTreeDNA Tree
  • Wikitree family tree only
  • MyHeritage family tree only
  • Archived FamilyTreeDNA Tree only

You You can access and manage your tree from the Genealogy page of your Account Settings.

Navigating To Your Family Tree

To access your Family Tree from your dashboard:

  1. Sign in to your kit.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the dashboard, hover your cursor over your name and kit number.
  3. Click Account Settings from the drop-down menu.Dashboard management.png

  5. You are directed to the Family Tree tab of the Genealogy page.

Family Tree Options

FamilyTreeDNA provides three options for connecting your kit to a family tree. The Family Tree tab will appear slightly differently from the graphic below depending on the method you choose.

1. MyHeritage Family Tree

FamilyTreeDNA offers a great opportunity to build and connect your family tree directly within a MyHeritage account. You can easily create a free MyHeritage account to import a GEDCOM file of any size or build a tree with up to 250 individuals.

Upgrading to a MyHeritage membership unlocks a wealth of powerful features, including the ability to expand your tree with an unlimited number of individuals and gain full access to their extensive historical records database. This connection allows you to seamlessly integrate your genealogical research with your FamilyTreeDNA kit, enhancing your discovery process.

2. WikiTree Family Tree

WikiTree is a free, collaborative genealogy website that helps you build a single, shared family tree. You can connect your FamilyTreeDNA kit to your WikiTree profile to help genetic cousins find you and confirm genealogical relationships. WikiTree also offers privacy controls, GEDCOM uploads, and a supportive community of genealogists, all at no cost. This platform is a great way to contribute to a universal family tree while integrating your DNA findings.

3. Archived Family Tree

Prior to September of 2024, FamilyTreeDNA provided the option to create or upload a tree hosted on our website. If you have created one on your kit, your tree has been archived and is accessible in a read-only format.
