Note: This article is about linking matches if you have connected your kit to a MyHeritage account. For assistance with the MyHeritage Family Tree builder, please see the MyHeritage Help Center.
With the new MyHeritage tree integration, you can now link your matches through the Tree Settings Page, or your Match Pages.
Relinking previously linked matches
In the GEDCOM that FamilyTreeDNA sends to MyHeritage, we will indicate which individuals in the tree have a match link associated with them. Those matches will still need to be relinked after the connection is complete, but the process should be smoother than if you used a different tree.
Once the accounts are linked, you will need to navigate to the Genealogy tab of your account settings in your kit. Note that these are the setting on the main dashboard of your kit and not the settings on your MyHeritage Tree.
From this page, click Link your matches to relink your matches on the Tree Settings page. Your tree on MyHeritage will not have any indication that an individual on the tree is a match at FamilyTreeDNA.
This will open a pop-up window that includes the names of your previously linked matches. To find suggestions for this individual on your tree, first click Search.
A suggestion will be made to link each to specific individuals in your tree. Those individuals will have been identified from the note FamilyTreeDNA made in their transferred GEDCOM. However, you will need to confirm each link. If there is not an individual in your tree that matches their search, you will see a message suggesting that you try a similar name or that you may need to expand their tree to include the individual.
Note: When searching for individuals, it is important to search for names as they are listed on the tree, not on their kit. For example, if you have your mother listed by her maiden name in your tree but she uses her married name on her kit, you will need to search for her maiden name as listed in the tree.
Linking new matches
The ability to pull up a list of matches and drag and drop them on individuals in your tree is no longer available as the match page is maintained at FamilyTreeDNA, and the tree is managed at MyHeritage. You will need to link matches from the Matches pages. To link matches follow these steps:
- Click “Link on Family Tree” next to the match you want to link.
- Search by name for an individual in your MyHeritage tree to link the match to. FamilyTreeDNA will send a request to MyHeritage for this search that includes who the kit has indicated they are in the tree. MyHeritage will return any individuals in the kit’s tree that match the name you searched for. They will include those individuals’ relationship to the kit (father, sister, 3rd cousin twice removed, etc.) along with their full name in the tree and their birth/death years.
MyHeritage will tell FamilyTreeDNA the linked relationship and if the relationship is through the paternal side or maternal side. FamilyTreeDNA will display the linked relationship on the Matches pages and send that information through our Family Matching algorithm. Your tree on MyHeritage will not have any indication that an individual on the tree is a match at FamilyTreeDNA and linked.
