The Members Subgrouping tool allows you to create, manage, and delete subgroups. You may also add and delete project members from subgroups.
Accessing the Member Subgrouping Tool
To access this page:
- Sign in to your GAP account by entering your Project Administrator username and password.

On the navigation bar, hover your cursor over Project Admin and click Member Subgrouping on the drop-down menu.
OR
In the lower section of your GAP dashboard, in the Project Administration section, click Member Subgrouping.
You are directed to the Member Subgrouping tool.
How To Create a Subgroup
- In the upper-left corner of the page, click the blue Create Subgroup button. The Subgroup Information page is displayed.
- In the Subgroup Name field, enter the name that you want to give your subgroup.
- In the Description field, enter a brief description of the subgroup.
- In the Subgroups to display field, select one of the following:
- Y-DNA – Select this option if you want to create a Y-DNA subgroup.
- mtDNA – Select this option if you want to create an mtDNA subgroup.
- Click in the Select subgroup color field to display the available colors for your subgroup.
- Select the color that you want to associate with the subgroup. This color will help you to identify the subgroup and to identify which members are assigned to the subgroup.
- In the lower-left corner of the page, click Create to create your subgroup.
If you want to cancel the new subgroup, click Discard.
Member Subgrouping Tool
Once you have subgroups created, you can view, manage, and edit your subgroups and members. You will also have the ability to move Ungrouped members to subgroups and to select members to add to newly created subgroups.
The Member Subgrouping page displays the following columns:
- Subgroup Name – Name of the subgroup.
- Description – Description given to the subgroup.
- Color – Identifying color assigned to your subgroup.
- Actions – Subgrouping actions. For more information, see the below Member Subgrouping Actions topic.
Member Subgrouping Actions
The following subgrouping items are available in the Member Subgrouping page Actions column.
(Member Management)
Click this button to open the Member Management page. The Member Management page allows you to add and move subgrouped members (or Ungrouped members) from one subgroup to another. You can also select a member to add to a new subgroup by creating the new subgroup straight from this page.
(Edit Subgroup)
Click this button to edit the subgroup. This action allows you to edit the subgroup’s name, description, and associated color. It also allows you to view, add, and remove subgroup members.
(Color Selector)
Click to change the color associated with the subgroup.
(Delete Subgroup)
Click to permanently delete the subgroup.
Editing Subgroups
To edit a subgroup:
- Access the Member Subgrouping tool.
- In the upper part of the page, click one of the following options:
- Y-DNA – Select if you want to edit a Y-DNA subgroup.
- mtDNA – Select if you want to edit an mtDNA subgroup.
- Your subgroups are displayed.
- In the subgroups list, click the pencil Action icon (Edit Subgroup) located in the Actions column for the subgroup you want to edit.
- You are directed to the Edit Subgroups page.
- On the Subgroup Information tab, edit the subgroup’s name, description, and assigned color as desired.
- Note: You cannot change subgroup type (i.e., Y-DNA/mtDNA).
- In the lower-left corner, click Save.
Viewing, Adding, and Removing Subgroup Members
To add members to a subgroup:
- Access the Member Subgrouping tool.
- In the upper part of the page, click one of the following options:
- Y-DNA – Select if you want to add members to a Y-DNA subgroup.
- mtDNA – Select if you want to add members to an mtDNA subgroup.
- Your subgroups are displayed.
- In the subgroups list, click the pencil Action icon (Edit Subgroup) for the subgroup you want to edit. You are directed to the Edit Subgroup page.
- Click the Subgroup Members
- In the upper-left corner of the tab, click Add Member. The Add Member window is displayed.
- On the Add Member window, Ungrouped Group Project members are displayed by default.
- If you want to add an Ungrouped member, select the check boxes displayed to the left for the member(s) that you want to add to your subgroup.
- If you want to add (move a member) from another one of your subgroups, click the drop-down list at the top of the page, and select the subgroup from which you want to add a member. (In other words, click on the field that displays the word Ungrouped and a list of your other subgroups are displayed.)
- Once you have selected a subgroup, select the member(s) that you want to move to the current subgroup.
- In the lower-right corner of the window, click Add. The selected members are added to the subgroup.
To remove members from a subgroup:
- Access the Member Subgrouping tool.
- In the upper part of the page, click one of the following options:
- Y-DNA – Select if you want to remove members from a Y-DNA subgroup.
- mtDNA – Select if you want to remove members from an mtDNA subgroup.
- Your subgroups are displayed.
- In the subgroups list, click the pencil Action icon (Edit Subgroup) for the subgroup you want to edit.
- Click the Subgroup Members
- From the list of Subgroup Members, select the check box(es) displayed to the left of the member(s) you want to remove.
- In the upper-left corner of the Subgroup Members tab, click Remove. The selected members are removed from the subgroup.
Member Management
The Member Management page allows you to add and move subgrouped members (or Ungrouped members) from one subgroup to another. You can also select a member to add to a new subgroup by creating the new subgroup straight from this page.
There are two ways to access the Member Management page:
- Subgroup Member Management – Click the double arrow Action icon (Member Management) associated with a subgroup in the Member Subgrouping tool.
OR
- Ungrouped Member Management – Click the blue Manage Ungrouped button located in the upper-left corner of the Member Subgrouping.
The Member Management page contains two group columns. These columns display as follows:
When you access the page for Subgroup Member Management:
- In the left column, the members of the subgroup you are managing are listed. Note that the name of the subgroup is displayed in the gray field at the top of the column.
- The right column by default displays the list of all Ungrouped Note that Ungrouped is displayed in the gray field at the top of the column.
- You can click this gray field to display a list of your other subgroups. Select one of these subgroups to display the members of that subgroup.
When you access the page for Ungrouped Member Management:
- In the left column, all of your ungrouped members are listed. Note that Ungrouped is displayed in the gray field at the top of the column.
- The right column by default displays one of your subgroups. Note that the name of the subgroup is displayed in the gray field at the top of the column.
- You can click this field to display a list of all of your subgroups. Select one of these subgroups to display the members of that subgroup.
Moving Members Between Subgroups or From/To the Ungrouped List:
To move members between subgroups or from/to the Ungrouped list:
- Access the Member Management page.
- In the right column, click the top gray field to display the drop-down list.
- Select the subgroup (or Ungrouped) for which you want to move members to or from.
- Do one of the following:
- If you want to move a member from the left column (subgroup or Ungrouped) to the right column (subgroup or Ungrouped), in the left column, select the check box for the member(s) you want to move to the right column.
- If you want to move a member from the right column (subgroup or Ungrouped) to the left column (subgroup or Ungrouped), in the right column, select the check box for the member(s) you want to move to the left column.
- At the top of the column in which you have selected the member(s), click Move. The members are moved from one group to the other group.
Note: If you are viewing Y-DNA subgroups, you can only move members to other Y-DNA subgroups or ungrouped ones. If you are viewing mtDNA subgroups, you can only move members to other mtDNA subgroups or Ungrouped.
Moving Members and Creating subgroups At the Same Time
To move a member and create a subgroup at the same time:
- Access the Member Management page.
- From either the left column or the right column, select the check box for the member(s) that you want to add to a new subgroup.
- At the top of the column in which you selected the member(s), click Move to new subgroup. The Move to a new subgroup window is displayed.
- In the Subgroup Name field, enter the name of the new subgroup.
- In the Description field, enter a brief description of the new subgroup.
- Click in the Select subgroup color field to display the available colors for your subgroup.
- Select the color that you want to assign to the subgroup.
- Click Move in the lower-right corner. The selected member(s) are moved to the newly created subgroup. You will be able to access the new subgroup the same as your other subgroups.
Note: If you are viewing Y-DNA subgroups, you can only create new Y-DNA subgroups. If you are viewing mtDNA subgroups, you can only create new mtDNA subgroups.
