Sample Collection Kit Storage

Sample Collection Kits

Sample collection kits include two vials—one for each cheek— both labeled with a barcode associating the vials with your order. These vials contain a lysis buffer, which helps to preserve the DNA sample at room temperature. It also includes two sterile buccal (inside of the cheek) swab sticks. These vials contain a lysis buffer, which helps to preserve the DNA sample. As long as the vials and swabs remain sealed, the collection kit does not expire. Hot and cold temperatures do not affect the quality of the lysis buffer or the collected DNA sample.

Sample Check-in and Storage

When your DNA sample arrives at our facility, the barcodes are scanned at check-in. This triggers a notification email to the kit owner that we have received your sample. A single vial is sent to our federally compliant CAP/CLIA certified lab for DNA extraction where the DNA is stored in our robotic freezer at -20 C, ready to be processed for the ordered test(s). The remaining DNA is returned to the freezer and stored for any future test(s) ordered by the kit owner. The second vial is stored in a secured room at room temperature for up to 25 years and is used only in the event that your DNA from the first vial does not provide sufficient quantity or quality for the test(s) ordered by the kit owner.

Different Types of Collection Kits

Over the years, FamilyTreeDNA has changed the type of swab stick and vial that are included in the kits. The style of vials and swab sticks we have used since April, 2018 is designed to fully automate the DNA extraction process. Older collection kits are still viable, though they require a manual extraction process. This means there may be some delay in processing DNA samples collected with older kits.

You can easily tell which style of test you have based on the cap on the vials. Current vials have large orange caps, while older kits may have small red or clear caps. If you have an older kit, we recommend contacting Customer Service to have a new replacement kit mailed to you.
