Data Deletion

At FamilyTreeDNA, we believe that your data belongs to you, and you have every right to decide how it is used, stored, or shared. Your privacy and trust are extremely important to us, and we are fully committed to giving you control over your personal information. You can review our Terms of Service and Privacy Statement for more details.

You may request to have your data deleted and/or your DNA sample destroyed at any time. There are several things to keep in mind when deciding to delete your data.

We are not affiliated with 23andMe

In light of recent news involving 23andMe, we want to clarify that FamilyTreeDNA has no relationship with 23andMe, and your data with us is not affected by those events. Please rest assured that protecting your information is central to everything we do.

Important Note on Deletion

  • Deleting your account is permanent and irreversible.
    • Once completed:
      • All DNA test results and account data will be permanently removed.
      • Any stored DNA samples will be destroyed.
      • If you wish to test with us again in the future, you will need to purchase a new kit and provide a new DNA sample.
  • If you have connected or transferred a tree to MyHeritage and wish for that to be deleted, you must contact MyHeritage.

Security Requirement

Please send data deletion requests to deletemydata@familytreedna.com. To protect your privacy and security, data deletion requests must be submitted from the primary email address associated with your FamilyTreeDNA account.

Your request must include the following:

  • Full name of the tester (or the name as it appears on the kit, if that is different)
  • Kit number (if known)
  • Confirmation that you understand this action is permanent and irreversible

Alternative Options to Consider

If your concern is related to privacy or visibility, you may wish to consider these less permanent options:

  • Withdraw matching consent - Your name will be removed from match lists, and you will no longer appear in other users’ matches.
  • Update notification preferences - Manage your email preferences in your account settings.

Additional Considerations

  • If you have uploaded DNA data from another company, it will also be permanently deleted in our database.
  • Any physical DNA sample provided will be destroyed in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Once deleted, no part of your account or data can be recovered.
