mtDNA Haplogroup Origins Guide

mtDNA Haplogroup Origins allows you to view your mtDNA matches’ haplogroup information along with a brief description of their anthropological origins.

Accessing mtDNA Haplogroup Origins 

You can access mtDNA Haplogroup Origins from your dashboard or from your navigation bar.

To access from your dashboard:

1. Sign in to your kit.
2. On your dashboard, locate the mtDNA Results & Tools widget.
3. On the mtDNA Results & Tools widget, click the See More button, and select Haplogroup Origins from the list menu.

To access from your navigation bar:

1. Sign in to your kit.
2. On the navigation bar at the top of the page, go to Results & Tools > mtDNA > Haplogroup Origins.

mtDNA Haplogroup Origins Overview

mtDNA Haplogroup Origins Sections 

Depending on the mtDNA test(s) you have taken and at which level you have matches, the following sections might be displayed on your Haplogroup Origins: 

• HVR1 Matches - Mitochondrial matches at the Hypervariable Region 1 level who have provided a country of origin for their maternal Earliest Known Ancestor. 
• HVR1 and HVR2 Matches - Mitochondrial matches at the Hypervariable Region 1 and 2 levels who have provided a country of origin for their maternal Earliest Known Ancestor.
• Exact Match - Mitochondrial Genetic Distance 0 matches at the Coding Region level who have provided a country of origin for their maternal Earliest Known Ancestor.
•  Genetic Distance -1 - Mitochondrial Genetic Distance 1 matches at the Coding Region level who have provided a country of origin for their maternal Earliest Known Ancestor. 
• Genetic Distance -2 - Mitochondrial Genetic Distance 2 matches at the Coding Region level who have provided a country of origin for their maternal Earliest Known Ancestor.
• Genetic Distance -3 - Mitochondrial Genetic Distance 3 matches at the Coding Region level who have provided a country of origin for their maternal Earliest Known Ancestor.

mtDNA Haplogroup Origins Columns

The following information about your mtDNA matches’ is displayed:

• Haplogroup – Displays the predicted or confirmed haplogroup of each match. A haplogroup represents a shared maternal line ancestor that lived thousands of years ago. Everyone in a haplogroup shares a common distant ancestor.
• Country – Self-reported country of the match’s earliest known direct maternal line ancestor.
• Comments – Additional information about the maternal Earliest Known Ancestors of the matches at this level, such as regional or ethnic connections, as reported by the matches.
• Match Total – Display the total number of matches who share a particular predicted or confirmed mitochondrial haplogroup and self-reported maternal country of origin.
