myOrigins® Guide

myOrigins® Sections Overview

myOrigins® Sidebar

The myOrigins® sidebar displays information about your origins and the origins you share with your Family Finder™ matches.

Your origins are composed of Super Populations categorized by Continental Region. Each Super Population is then broken down even further into what we call Population Clusters.

The sidebar contains the myOrigins® tab and the Compare Origins tab.

myOrigins® Tab

The myOrigins® tab displays the percentile breakdown of your origins by Super Population. These percentages are further broken down for your Population Clusters within each population.

Compare Origins Tab

The Compare Origins tab lists your Family Finder matches their relation to you. From here, you can view the origins that you share with a match and add pin markers for their earliest known maternal and paternal ancestor if they have that information added in their kit.

myOrigins® Map

The myOrigins® Map is an interactive page that displays your Population Clusters as color-coded regions.

You can click on a color-coded region on the map to view its description in the sidebar.

Understanding Your myOrigins® Breakdown

On your myOrigins® Version 3.0 page, your Population Clusters are grouped by Super Populations per Continental Region, and your results are displayed in a hierarchical structure as follows:

  • Continental Region - The main region of the world in which one or more Super Populations are located.
    • Super Population - The region in which one or more Population Clusters are found. A Super Population may also illustrate a relatedness among the Population Clusters found in this region.
Please note that for certain populations the name of the Super Population might match the name of the Continental Region.
      • Population Cluster - A FamilyTreeDNA reference population to which a user matches. A Population Cluster can be one specific group or a few related but separate groups of people.

The following are examples of the myOrigins® hierarchical structure:

  • Middle East = Continental Region
    • North Africa = Super Population
      • Maghreb & Eqypt = Population Cluster

  • Americas = Continental Region
    • Americas = Super Population
      • Amerincian - Andes & Caribbean = Population Cluster
      • Amerincian - Central & South Mexico = Population Cluster

Example 3

In example 3:

  • Africa = Continental Region
    • East Africa = Super Population
      • Western Lake Victoria Basin = Population Cluster
    • West Africa = Super Population
      • Liberia & Ivory Coast = Population Cluster
    • Horn of Africa = Super Population
      • Eritrea, Northern Ethiopia & Somalia = Population Cluster

Understanding Trace Results

Once you receive your Family Finder results, you might see that your Population Clusters includes trace percentages. We call these Trace Results.

What are Trace Results?

A Trace Result indicates that you have a very small amount of shared DNA in common with the corresponding reference population. Please note that smaller DNA segments are more likely to be misattributed.
