General AI models lack access to FamilyTreeDNA’s proprietary, real-time database, relying instead on static training sets that may contain outdated nomenclature (e.g., R1b1a1b vs. R-M269), incomplete SNP paths, or contradictory historical data. The evolving nature of the field also increases the likelihood of AI conflating data points and “hallucinating” incorrect assumptions.

  • Ancestral vs. Derived Values - Compares your specific nucleotide base against the GRCh38 human reference genome to confirm if you are positive or negative for a newly discovered variant.
  • Read Quality & Coverage - View the visual representation of your actual DNA "reads" (forward and reverse strands) covering a selected chromosome position.

The Y-DNA haplotree is a dynamic database that is constantly being expanded and updated. With hundreds of thousands of individual SNPs and more being added all the time, there are significant challenges to accurate research. Because genetic genealogy is a highly specialized, rapidly evolving field, our customer service chatbot, live chat, or phone line cannot look up individual SNPs (e.g. R-M269, J-M172, E-V13, FT1234, BY9999, rs12345, or any other alphanumeric haplogroup designation) in real-time.

If you are looking for information on a specific branch of the Y-DNA tree:

  1. Sign into your FamilyTreeDNA Account
  2. Go to your Discover tool or Y-DNA Haplotree page
  3. Enter your haplogroup or search your results there for a dynamic, real-time analysis
