mtDNA Discover™ Notable Connections are famous historical or modern individuals who share the haplogroup you have selected. These haplogroups are determined through DNA testing of matrilineal descendants or through forensic DNA testing methods. The common maternal ancestor between you and the notable connection may have lived thousands of years ago, so you are unlikely to be invited to the next family dinner, but it illustrates how we are all connected.
The mtDNA Discover™ Notable Connections Report displays the following options:
- Notable Connections List - Individuals, both living and deceased, who share a common direct maternal ancestor with you, or with the haplogroup you have selected.
-
Notable Connection - Lists the name of the selected notable connection and a time estimate of when the ancient individual is believed to have lived.
- For more information regarding how we arrive at these timeframes, please see our blog article.
- Shared Ancestor - An estimate of how far back in time you (or the haplogroup you select) share a direct maternal ancestor with the selected notable connection.
- Most Recent Common Ancestral Haplogroup - A visualization of the ancestral path to the common maternal ancestor shared with the selected notable connection.
- Timeline - A visualization of when these individuals and ancestral haplogroups lived in relation to historical periods. This helps to contextualize the age of your shared maternal lineage.
Important Considerations
- "Fun Facts": The information presented in the Notable Connections section is based on scientific analysis and is intended to be interesting and informative.
- Not Direct Ancestors: While you share a common maternal line ancestor with these notable individuals, they are not necessarily your direct ancestors. The connection indicates a shared origin in the distant past.
- Further Research: This feature is a starting point for exploration. You can use the information here to learn more about the history and migrations associated with your mtDNA haplogroup.
