The mtDNA Discover™ Country Frequency Map displays the countries of origin for direct maternal ancestry for all people in a given haplogroup. The data is drawn from self-reported direct maternal countries of origin that test takers have listed in the Earliest Known Ancestor tab of their account settings.
It is important to remember that the countries listed by test takers are self-reported. This report also includes publicly available academic data and research samples.
The mtDNA Discover™ Country Frequency Report can be viewed in Map View or Table View.
Map view
The map view of the Country Frequency Report contains the following options:
- Share Page - Displays a pop up window with options to share the report of a haplogroup through social media, text, email, chat, or by copying the direct page link.
- Toggles between Map View and Table View. The current view being displayed is shaded in blue.
- The phylogenetic ancestral path from Mitochondrial Eve to the selected haplogroup.
- A map displaying the countries where the selected haplogroup is found. Hovering your mouse over each country (or tapping it) will provide a pop-up window displaying the overall percentage that the selected haplogroup represents in that country.
In other words, the percentage of mtDNA test takers who have listed that country have listed that country as their maternal country of origin. in the selected haplogroup. based on all haplogroups in our database reported in that country.
Table view
The Table view of the Country Frequency Report contains the following options:
- Share Page - Displays a pop up window with options to share the report of a haplogroup through social media, text, email, chat, or by copying the direct page link.
- Toggles between Map View and Table View. The current view being displayed is shaded in blue.
- Country - Countries listed by test takers in the selected haplogroup.
- Number of Tested Descendants - The number of people listing that country as their maternal country of origin. This includes research samples and publicly available academic data.
-
Haplogroup Frequency - The percentage of people listing that country as their maternal country of origin. This number is based on the total number of test takers in that country, regardless of haplotype.
In other words, of all the people who list that country as their maternal country of origin, ____% share the selected haplogroup.
Understanding the mtDNA Discover™ Country Frequency Report
This report allows you to begin to pinpoint where your ancestors are from. By identifying where your haplogroup is commonly found, this report can:
- Help confirm family stories
- Guide historical research
- Suggest regions to explore for maternal ancestors
The report is also animated, so you can watch the map become more specific over time as your haplogroup refines.
