Using the mtDNA Discover™ Classic Tree

This is the classic view of the FamilyTreeDNA mtDNA Mitotree. It includes mtFull Sequence results from the largest mtDNA database in the world, together with ancient and modern samples from academic studies.

mtDNA Discover™ Classic Tree contains the following options:

  1. Filter Drop-Down - Clicking this field will provide the following options:

  2. Filter Current Tree - Filters haplogroups based only on the branch currently being viewed.
  3. Display Options - Clicking this icon will provide the following options:

    • Downstream Branches
    • Ancient Connections
    • Present-Day Testers
    • Group Countries
    • Confidence
    • Age Estimates
    • Variants
  4. Reset - Resets all search terms and filters.
  5. Expand All - Expands all downstream branches of the haplogroup you are currently viewing.
  6. Collapse All - Collapses all downstream branches of the haplogroup you are currently viewing.
  7. Show Legend - Clicking this toggle will provide the following legend:

  8. Ancestral Path - The line of upstream branches leading from the current haplogroup to Mitochondrial Eve.
  9. Back button - Follows the current haplogroup upstream to older branches.
  10. Haplogroup - Lists the mtDNA haplogroup you are currently viewing.
  11. Age of most recent shared direct maternal ancestor.
  12. Branch Confidence - Our confidence in the topology (structure) based on mutation rates and alternative possibilities. 
  13. Mutations shared with nearby branches - 
  14. Minimize/Maximize - Minimizes or maximizes the branches currently displayed. 
  15. Haplotype Cluster - Individuals who share the exact set of mitochondrial mutations. These differ from haplogroups in that a haplogroup can contain some slight differences in mutations.
  16. Country of Origin - The number of customers who have listed each maternal country of origin in the Earliest Known Ancestor Tab of their Account Settings.
