How is this different from PhyloTree?
Tens of thousands of more mtDNA sequences are used to build the Mitotree, and as a result, the Mitotree has tens of thousands of new branches. The Mitotree is the largest mtDNA Tree of Humankind in the world. (there are also going to be some differences in the “recipe” used to build it, but we’ll need to get that from the Million Mito Team, and that elaboration can come later)
Why a new tree?
There’s nothing wrong with the PhyloTree. However, it does have only a small number of branches, and each was formed typically several thousand years ago. Knowing you share a matrilineal ancestor with someone in the Stone or Metal Ages is neat but not helpful for genealogy.
Why do some of my matches not have a Mitotree haplogroup?
Mitotree haplogroups will only be provided to testers with mtFull Sequence results
During the beta phase, new mtFull Sequence results may not initially receive a placement on the Mitotree. We’re working to establish a weekly update cycle to place new results, but there may be initial delays.
What’s a haplotype?
A haplotype cluster represents multiple testers with identical mitochondrial signatures
Why am I in a group of other testers with the same haplotype but we did not form a new haplogroup?
(this is going to behave differently than the Y-DNA haplotree)
Because haplotype signatures can include fast-mutating markers and personal mutations, testers within a haplotype cluster are not necessarily closer maternal relatives to each other than to other testers within the same haplogroup, and therefore may not always form a new haplogroup/branch.
When will I receive my new Mitotree haplogroup?
During the beta phase, new mtFull Sequence results may not initially receive a placement on the Mitotree. We’re working to establish a weekly update cycle to place new results, but there may be initial delays. We will send you an email when your Updated mtDNA Haplogroup is available.
(timing tbd with Goran still)
How does this help my genealogy research? (this one can come post-release)
Why is there no Globetrekker for mtDNA Discover?
(it’s coming soon and also FMS exclusive) (Group Time Tree also coming soon)
Why do I have two mtDNA haplogroups? Which one should I use?
How can I receive a Mitotree haplogroup?
If you do not already have an mtFull Sequence, add on or upgrade.
If you have recently received your mtFull Sequence results, our team is analyzing your data and you will be placed on the Mitotree soon. During the beta phase, new mtFull Sequence results may not initially receive a placement on the Mitotree. We’re working to establish a weekly update cycle to place new results, but there may be initial delays. We will send you an email when your Updated mtDNA Haplogroup is available.
When will my Discover reports be available?
You’ll have access to mtDNA Discover for your Legacy mtDNA Haplogroup when your results post. During the beta phase, new mtFull Sequence results may not initially receive a placement on the Mitotree. We’re working to establish a weekly update cycle to place new results, but there may be initial delays. We will send you an email when your Updated mtDNA Haplogroup and Discover reports are available.
