Introduction
The Public Website tool is one of the most important tools in GAP as it allows you to control what information is shown, including test result types and privacy. It also allows you to enter valuable information about your project including background, goals, news, and more. There are many tabs on this tool, and each allows you to edit a different aspect of the project website. For a technical article on how to use these tools, click here.
Note: These pages will not appear to signed-in members or the Public Website if no information has been entered on them in this tool.
I am going to publish the understanding the Public Results Display Settings page too, so that the links can be uniform
Most of these tabs are designed for you to write information about the project or genealogical or genetic research results. Information added in these tabs will be available on the project website under the About menu found by clicking About on the left hand column of the page.
Site Configuration
There are several settings that regulate what types of information is displayed on your page. To learn more about what each of these options means, take a look at our Using the Admin - Public Website Tool article.
The Site configuration tab has many options to control the privacy settings and results types for your project website. In most cases projects can be accessed both through a project members kit and by the general public. This tab will control which information is displayed publicly, and which is displayed to project members only.
Please note that the Project Members Only option under YDNA Options and mtDNA Options means that a member must be signed into the kit that is in the project. If a member manages multiple kits, they will need to make sure they are signed into the correct kit to view these results.
Background
On this tab you may write a description of your project. This is the first tab that is shown when a member clicks the About menu on the project website, so you may find it useful to include a brief description, project goals, expectations, or other important information even if that information is included elsewhere.
Goals
This communicates to your members or prospective members what the project goals are. This helps members decide if your project is a good fit for them as well as what the best ways for them to contribute would be.
News
This section is often used to announce family reunions, conferences, society meetings, or lecture or workshop, you can announce that here. Group members may not regularly visit this section, so another great way to communicate news is through the Bulk Email tool.
Results
This is a good section to include research breakthroughs and new insights pertaining to the project goals.
Code of Conduct
This is an area to clarify what is expected of project members, and what is and is not allowed. This can be a written resource to refer to when a group member is acting in a way you feel is inappropriate.
